Story line: Gabbar Singh
Rajput (Akshay Kumar) creates his own vigilante military network called the
Anti-Corruption Force (ACF) that eliminates the most corrupt individuals, from
all walks of life, in a systematic manner. As pressure builds on Police and
Government to track down the man who masterminds these killings, Balbir Singh
(Sonu Sood) is specially summoned to head the task. He is aided by Suryam
(Prakash Raj) who, though being just a constable in the mammoth Police force,
is compelled by his instincts to see through the underlying design.
This is one such
story of a man remorselessly wronged by the establishment. One freak incident
results in everything he held dear taken away from him. Predictably, the system
doesn't seem to care - let alone resolve. That's when Ajay (AK) takes matters
in his own hands. An underground vigilante army, a secret identity, an
elaborate modus...all of these combined make a 'GABBAR' - a true hero, with
dreadful villainous instincts.
Know more about the
captain of the Ship, the director: In 2008, Krish made his debut
with Gamyam, starring Allari Naresh, Sharwanand, and Kamalinee Mukherjee. The
film was produced by his father Jagarlamudi Saibaba along with his
brother-in-law Bibo Srinivas, and his friend Rajeev Reddy who came forward
after Krish vainly tried to convince many notable Telugu film producers. The
film went on to become a big hit at the box office, and won several awards,
including the Best Picture and Best Director prizes at the 2009 South Filmfare
Award.
This blockbuster film
was remade in Tamil as 'Kadalana Summa illa", in Kannada as
"Savaari" and in Bengali as "Dui Prithbi".
Krish's next film,
Vedam, released theatrically in June 2010. The film, starring Allu Arjun, Manoj
Manchu, and Anushka Shetty in the lead roles, was the first multistarrer film
in Telugu after more than a decade. It was well received by both critics and
audiences, winning four major awards at the 58th Filmfare Awards South, with
Krish receiving his second Filmfare Award for Best Director.
Vedam was also the
second film to win all the four major awards (Best Movie, Best Director for
Krish, Best Actor for Allu Arjun and Best Actress for Anushka Shetty), after
Jeevana Jyothi in 1975 and had a good run at the box office as well.
Following the success
of Vedam, Krish was signed to direct its Tamil remake, titled Vaanam, starring
Silambarasan Rajendar, Bharath, and Anushka Shetty, reprising her role, in the
main roles. Like its original version, Vaanam too released to critical acclaim.
His latest film Krishnam Vande Jagadgurum starring Rana Daggubati and Nayantara
was blockbuster at the box office.
My “Gut Feel” and
preview:
This film is a remake
of the Tamil film Ramana directed by A. R. Murugadoss. It was later remade in
Telugu as Tagore with Chiranjeevi in the lead and then in Kannada as Vishnu
Sena with Vishnuvardhan in the lead role and unofficial remake in Bengali as
Tiger. So practically has been tried and tested in south with story and
screenplay which has been a critical and commercial success down south.
I have no problems
with remakes however it should be adapted aligned to the mass audience of that
region. A great plot and story can go drastically wrong if showcased and
presented in way which north Indian audience not able to relate even being
Akshay kumar around in lead role.
Sanjay
leela bhansali teamed up with akshay kumar and Prabhu Deva and delivered Rowdy
Rathore which was a remake of remake of Telugu movie Vikramarkudu. Rowdy
rathore was a hit however as I go by my gut feel, “Gabbar is back “ would
disappoint both critics and audience. Whole presentation is so down south
oriented that I believe neither audience would able to relate to the narration
nor with presentation of this movie.
Good part is that
movie is just above 2 hours and fast paced which generally do work in south
however as I checked the story line I am expecting it be a disappointing act
for north India audience.
In spite being backed
by big banner and Akshay kumar in lead role, a thumps down from my side for
this movie and I would give this movie 2.5 out of 5 stars, three days before
the release.
